Peanut Butter Pickle Stew: What Google's AI Max Migration Really Means

· Algis Aukstuolis

The right ingredients don't guarantee the right results.

Here's a fun way to plan dinner for your family. Measure each person's nutritional needs (calories, macros, vitamins), put the numbers in a spreadsheet, find the ingredients that hit those totals, and combine them into something edible. I'm sure everyone will love your peanut butter pickle stew.

On paper, it works. The plan was optimized against good data. Who doesn't like peanut butter? Who doesn't want perfect nutrition?

Start with the people at the table

Most of us plan dinner differently. We start with the people at the table. One person won't touch mushrooms, another can't handle spice, and it's getting cold out, so everyone wants something comforting. Braised beef stew it is, with apple pie and a small scoop of vanilla ice cream for dessert.

Marketers face the same split: optimize to the data, or start with the audience and build a strategy from there. Mathematical models are useful, and the pressure to think in them is fair. Treating them as the only way to think is where the risk starts.

What's actually changing

Ad platforms keep pushing toward the math. Google's latest move is AI Max for Search, which it began switching on automatically for some campaigns on September 1. If you care about cross-channel coordination and brand compliance, losing control over who sees your ads and what they say sounds alarming.

Take a breath. The migration is narrower than the headlines suggest.

Google is upgrading campaigns that use two older settings: campaign-level broad match and automatically created assets.

  • Broad match campaigns get AI Max's search term matching, which works much like broad match already did by finding queries related to your keywords. Nothing else turns on by default.
  • Campaigns using automatically created assets also get text customization, which lets Google generate ad copy from your existing ads and website.

Dynamic Search Ads are next

Google pushed the DSA deadline to February 2027. That's when DSA campaigns convert with all three AI Max features enabled: search term matching, text customization, and final URL expansion, which lets Google choose the landing page it thinks best fits each search.

DSA already let Google write the headline and pick the page, so the change is smaller than it looks, though Google will now write more of the copy.

AI MAX ONLY UPGRADES CAMPAIGNS THAT ALREADY CHOSE FLEXIBILITY

Notice who's affected

Google is upgrading the campaigns where advertisers already chose flexibility. If you opted into broad match or DSA, you'd already traded some control for reach. AI Max changes how Google uses that freedom, not whether it has it.

If you prioritize strategy and cross-platform coordination, not much changes. Exact and phrase match keywords with ad copy you wrote aren't touched. Your targeting stays tight and your brand voice stays yours. You can also skip the automatic upgrade by turning off the older settings yourself.

Trying AI Max without giving up the wheel

If you want to try AI Max without giving up the wheel, you have more control than you might think. These settings all limit where Google can go:

  • Brand inclusions and exclusions
  • Location controls
  • URL exclusions
  • Text guidelines

Your website matters more than ever too. It's the raw material Google uses to pick landing pages, write copy and match search terms. If your site is off-brand or out of date, your ads will be too.

Resist the FOMO

The hardest part will be resisting FOMO. Google will publish case studies showing AI Max lifting performance, and some of them will hold up.

What those numbers miss is the compounding value of a message and customer journey that stay consistent across channels. They also take conversion signals at face value. A lower cost per conversion can mean you're buying cheaper customers who are worth less over time.

The algorithm will call that a win. Your CFO might not.

Planning dinner this fall

So this fall, when you're planning dinner, stay curious about what everyone wants to eat. Make a meal where the dishes go together. Measure the ingredients and watch how people react, and they'll come back for seconds.
